I finally decided that maybe the machine was smarter than I was. All this time, because I had installed Linux from this same CD set before, I had been skipping the disk integrity check. After failing completely with the spare CD-ROM drive, I decided to check the CD this morning.
Guess what... it failed.
I downloaded the ISO for disk 1 and burned another copy.
It just asked for disk 2...
