Yes, a CD-ROM drive can survive an exploding CD.
No, it's not a good idea to push that little internal manual eject button while the CD is spinning at full speed.
The only thing holding the mylar together is the label. It also appears that the mylar is simply applied to a clear plastic disc... who knew?
Update: It appears that the drive did not come through unscathed. It was acting a little funky after the "accident." Looks like I need to start shopping the sale papers (or convince the wife to let me have her "spare")
