A Song in my Heart

Last year about this time, my mother-in-law called us and told us she had bought us tickets to something called "Show Notes" produced by the Oklahoma City Lyric Theatre. I had heard of the Lyric Theatre and knew it was like a community theatre the performed mostly musicals. Show Notes, according to the web site, is "A series featuring informal, cabaret-style concerts, Show Notes features the music of your favorite songwriters performed by the best of Lyric talent. Dispersed between the music are insider tidbits that will let you in on the histories and inspirations that have shaped some of your favorite songs."

Last year, we were treated to the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein who wrote such classics as Oklahoma and The King and I. As the description says, between numbers we were treated to a director's commentary, if you will, describing the two men and their collaborative talents in producing the shows from which we were hearing songs.

Last night, we again attended Lyric Theatre's Show Notes courtesy of my mother-in-law. This time, they presented the music of Lerner and Loewe. It was an excellent performance featuring songs such as Almost Like Being in Love from Brigadoon, How to Handle a Woman and Camelot from Camelot, Thank Heaven for Little Girls from Gigi, and who could forget I Could have Dance All Night and Get Me to the Church on Time from My Fair Lady. These songs were presented by some very talented vocalists who, at moments, moved me with their voices. We also got a chance to see The Rain In Spain performed by the Lyric Academy kids. Too cute.

The date crept up on me too fast and I initially felt obligated to go. Then, our plans to go out to a nice dinner beforehand were dashed by timing problems and we ended up eating at Sonic before leaving Stillwater. But once we sat down and the music started, all of that washed away. I had a truly excellent time.

At the end of the show, they announced that in late January, as part of their Lyric Theatre Second Stage, they are staging an original production called I Want My 80's Musical. The title alone has me jazzed and I'll probably make an effort to go see it.
