Something Has Changed

In anticipation of reloading the operating system, I started uninstalling some non-critical software - mostly games. At some point, I apparently uninstalled whatever was thrashing my hard drive because it stopped. My PC is as quiet as it should be and there is no extraneous disk activity.

I'm still probably going to reinstall just because there are some other annoyances I think it will clear up. And I think I'm going to stay with Vista.
